시심(詩心)

내가 달마다 이 연작에다가

허전스런 이야기를 골르다시피 하여

시라고 써내니까

젊은 시인 하나가 하도 이상했던지

"그러면 세상에는 시 아닌 것이

하나도 없겠네요"하였다.

그렇다! 세상에는

시 아닌 것이

정녕, 하나도 없다.

사람을 비롯해서

모든 것돠 모든 일 속의

참되고 착하고 아름다운 것은

모두 다가 시다.

아니, 사람 누구에게나

또한 모든 것과 모든 일 속에는

진 ·선·미가 깃들어 있다.

죄 많은 곳에도 하느님의 은총이

풍성하듯이 말이다.*

그것을 찾아내서

마치 이런애처럼

맞보고 누리는 것이

시인이다.

Each month for this series
I select bits of idle chatter such as this
and turn out things called poems,

so that one young poet, perhaps finding it rather odd,
observed, "Then it seems there is absolutely nothing
in the whole world that is not a poem?"

Right! There is nothing
in the world, to be sure,
that is not a poem.

From humanity on down,
in every thing and every act,
all that is true and good and beautiful
is all poem.

More than that, in every person
and in every thing and in every act
the good, the beautiful, the true dwells.

And it is written that where sin increases
God's grace increases all the more.

Discovering that,
and then like a child
savoring and enjoying it,
is to be a poet.
