부끄러움

부끄러움이라는 것을

기억이라도 하는가?

그대들이 철들 무렵

어머니가 에비라고 하신

꽃병 같은 것을 깨고 나서

처음 느낀 바로 그것,

에덴동산의 아담과 이브가

하느님이 금하신 열매를 따먹고

무화과 잎새로 알몸을 가린

바로 그런 것 말이다.

인간이 어떤 잘못을 저질렀을 때

맨 먼저 느끼는 것은 부끄러움!

그것은 인간 양심의 증표요,

인간은 인간 구원의 싹수다.

그런데 오늘날 어른 그대들은

잘못을 저지르고도 부끄러움을 모른다.

그것은 그대들의 양심이 마비된 증표요,

그것은 그대들이 멸망으로 가는 싹수다.

I wonder if you can even recall
what that thing called shame is like?

That something you first felt
when you began to be aware of things,
after you broke the vase
that mother had said 'Don't touch!'

like the day when Adam and Eve
covered their nakedness with fig-leaves
in the Garden of Eden
after they had picked and eaten the God-forbidden fruit.

Shame? What humans first felt
when they did any wrong,
a sign of human conscience,
an omen of human salvation.

But nowadays you grown-ups,
even when you do wrong, you feel no shame!

That's a sign your consciences are paralyzed,
an omen that you are heading towards destruction.
