거듭남

저 성현들이 쳐드신 바

어린이 마음을

지각(知覺)이전의 상태로

너희는 오해하지들 말라!

그런 미숙(未熟)의 유치란

본능적 충동에 사로잡히거나

독선과 편협을 일삼게 되느니.

우리가 도달해야 할

어린이 마음이란

진리를 깨우침으로써

자기가 자신에게 이김으로써

이른바 '거듭남'에서 오는

순진이요, 단순이요,

소박인 것이다.

You should not make the mistake of thinking
that the childlike heart the sages proclaim
is the state that precedes the age of discretion;

for that kind of infancy, infant immaturity,
is shackled by instinctive impulses
or else is merely complacent and narrow,

while the spirit of childhood
that we have to attain

is an innocence, a simplicity,
an artlessness
that arise from 'rebirths' such as
recognition of the truth
and victory over self.
