The Birthplace in Kangnŭng of Hŏ Nansŏrhŏn
Hŏ Nansŏrhŏn (1563 - 1589), born Hŏ Ch'ohŭi, was a prominent Korean
female poet of the mid Chosŏn dynasty. Born into a prominent family in
Kangnŭng, on the east coast of Korea, as the daughter of the mayor of
the city, she was the older sister of Hŏ Gyun (1569-1618). He also was
one of Korea's most important literary figures during this period. She
married early, but suffered depression following the deaths of her
children after child birth and is widely believed to have committed
suicide at the age of 27. The photo below and in the attached slide show are of the house where she lived.
