Self-Discipline in “Upon Appleton House”
Abstract
Andrew Marvell"s “Upon Appleton House, To My Lord Fairfax” is
a country house poem with the apparent purpose of praising Sir
Thomas, Lord Fairfax and his family. However, the marked presence of
the narrator poet in this poem invites us to listen to his
ventriloquial voice that speaks of his endeavors to cope with “the
force and mutability of fortune.” Focusing on the narrator poet in
this poem reveals the contours of Marvell"s stoic self-discipline
through his meditations and reflections in the garden-like
countryside of Appleton House and its estate. Justus Lipsius’s
(Neo)stoicism, a philosophy that attempts to combine classical
stoicism and Christianity to help the individual to live through
religious wars and political conflicts, seems to be a guiding
principle in Marvell’s discipline for private and public
adversities. “Upon Appleton House” is a topography of Marvell’s
stoic training to find a way out of and prepare himself for the
future career of “political man” in the labyrinths of the English
Revolution and its aftermaths.
