Abstract

In approaching Andreas"s De amore objectively, one must confront the twofold problem of its subject and its ideological consistency. Its ostensible subject is amor, but it is not entirely clear what sort of amor Andreas has in mind, or whether his views are internally consistent. Despite the difficulty in searching for the systematic unity which runs all the way through the treatise, it is revealed that the love in which Andreas is interested is most appropriately to be found among the young, rich, and handsome, particularly among the noble class. Moreover, they are refined in behavior and sentiment, especially excellent in their verbal and logical skill, and they can devote themselves utterly to the pursuit of love without the distractions of having to make a living.
Another certain thing that can be found in Andreas"s treatise is that it is devoted not to strategies of seduction, but to playful dialogues between the lovers and their ladies. The playfulness involved in the artificial nature of their dialogues allows Andreas"s noble audience to enjoy the comic tension inherent in whether or not the sought after ladies would say "yes" or "no" and the ladies" clever retorts against the lovers" seductive arguments. Both parties can exchange their skillful and humorous badinage within a certain boundary of social manners and etiquettes. In a word, both parties seem to be enjoying the conversation in its own right, as in an amusing game of flirtation. In addition to the ludic effect of some sort of verbal game, Andreas"s treatise aims not so much at encouraging the adulterous affair with the ladies as at chastening and bridling the wild desire of the noble audience, especially the unmarried young knights, and at breeding them as the noble and virtuous knights for the societythey belong to.
