(Dongill Lee, Implication of Sword (Weapon) in Heroic Poetry)
Abstract
One of the most common features in the heroic poetry is that the
poet endeavors to conjure up the ideal heroic image through various
literary devices including the subtle fusion of the names of
weapons, mainly the sword, which is associated with heroic ideals.
The poem Beowulf is no exception to this case. The poet of Beowulf,
who is keenly aware of the superficial and symbolic meanings of
sword (weapon) in heroic society, seems to endeavor to convey its
significance through subtle combinations of words. His intention is
well proven from the very beginning of the poem.
In Beowulf, weapons and swords are frequently used as a major
means of literary device for establishing the heroic identity of a
warrior which is determined by the sense of “worthiness.”
This enhancement of the warrior’s worthiness by reference to
the sword is more clearly exemplified when a warrior is promoted
through a ritual ceremony in which the sword is involved. And a
warrior’s new identity is often established when the lord confers
upon him a new social position indicating promotion in social
status. And this ritual ceremony is consummated with the symbolic
gesture of “laying a sword on one’s lap.” “Laying a sword on one’s
lap” contains two meaning, one is the visible sign confirming the
warrior’s remarkable achievement or promotion in social rank, and
the other is to awaken a martial spirit to take action for either
fighting or revenge.
