The boy knew right away that the girl was the great-grand daughter of Dr. Yoon when he saw her by the stream. The girl had dipped her hands in the water and had started playing, as if she has never seen this kind of stream in Seoul.

For several days now, she has played with the water on the way home from school. She had played at the edge of the stream until yesterday. But now she is sitting on the very middle of a stepping stone.

The boy flopped down by the bank. He was going to wait the girl to move aside.
Luckily, she stepped aside for a passenger.

The next day, the boy appeared at the stream a little later than usual.
She was sitting on the middle of the bridge, washing her face. Her pink sweater, her sleeves neatly folded up, and her neck. Her neck was just so white.
After washing her face for a long time, now she stares fixedly into water. She may be mirring her face in the water. She suddenly grabs hold of water, as if a little fish is going past.

She continues to grip and drag the water speedily, as though she doesn't know whether the boy is sitting on the bank. She comes to nothing every time, though. She looks like having fun out of it as itself, grabbing water again and again. She is likely to get out of the way only if there is person crossing the stream like yesterday.

Then, she picks something out of the water, a white pebble. And then she springs to her feet and jumps across the stepping stones like a frog.

When she reaches the waterside, she abruptly turns her head towards the boy and says, “You idiot!”

The pebble flew at him.

He involuntarily jumped up.

She runs fluttering her short hair. She stepped into a trail in the field of reeds. Behind her are reed flowers shining under the crisp sunlight of autumn.

The girl will show up soon from the edge of reeds. It might have been quite a while, thought the boy. But she doesn't appear yet. He stands on tiptoe. It passed another while even from then.

Over the head of reeds, a handful of reed flowers moved. The girl is holding reed flowers in her arms. This time, she walked with slow steps. Especially brisk rays of the autumn sun are glittering around her hair with reed flowers. It seems like reed flowers are walking, not the girl.

He stays there until reed flowers disappear. Suddenly, he looked down on the pebble that she threw. It has dried. He picked up the pebble and put it into his pocket.
