3 sentences which we had a difficulty in translating
1. Let it be recorded that Barack Obama came into full possession of
the U.S. presidency toward the end of his February 24 budget speech to
a joint session of Congress.
2. This was the chord that had been missing in the first dour month of
Obama’s presidency – not so much optimism as confidence, the sense that
he was not only steering the presidency, but loving the challenge of it.
3. If the entitlement summit was a conversational concerto, the budget
speech was a full-blown symphony featuring a percussive series of
simple declarative sentences that conveyed a sense of command,
especially in the emotional heart of the speech, the section on banking
reform.

Problem
1. How to translate the phrase “Let it be recorded”
There is no such expression in Korea; especially, Korean grammar does
not have passive voice. Because we do not use such expression, we could
not come up with the idea why the writer wrote this phrase and how to
translate it. We tried to think if there are some phrases which
journalists use when they start their journals, but we could not find
ones.
è Because we judged the phrase is for starting the article, we just omitted it.

2월 24일에 있었던 국회의 양원 합동 회의의 예산안 연설이 막바지에 이르면서, Barack Obama는 미국의 대통령직을 완전히 손에 넣었다.
Sentence No. 2
Problem
1. Finding the adequate expression of the word “chord”
We could not understand what it means exactly; therefore, we had a lot
of trouble to translate the word. We looked up for the word and the
dictionary said chord is 화음, but we did not think it is suitable word
for our sentence.
è We thought the “chord” indicates the chord
of “generosity, a resilience, a decency and a determination”, which is
mentioned right before of that sentence; therefore, we just translated
it into 감정.
Our translation
이것은 암울했던 그의 임기 첫 달에는 미처 느끼지 못한 감정이었다. 그가, 대통령직을 단순히 수행해야 하는 직무로 생각하지 않고 그 과정에서 겪게 되는 역경까지 사랑한다는 것은 단순한 낙관론이라기보다는 확신에 가까웠다.

Problems
1. Length of the sentence
In Korean, words which have important meaning
usually come in the latter part of the sentence. However, it is vice
versa in English. For example, if the modifying word comes in front of
the modified word in Korea in most of the case, in English, they often
come next of the modified word. Furthermore, English users sometimes
lengthen sentences by using relative. Therefore, in most case, when
using Korean, it looks like weird and hard to understand if the
sentence becomes long.
2. Using musical terms for simile
“C[c]onversational concerto,” “full-blown symphony,” “percussive” were especially hard to translate.
