Shakespeare

Fall Semester 2000 MWF 2pm

Taught by Brother Anthony (An Sonjae) in English.

We will study two plays by Shakespeare that been made into films several times: A Midsummer NightĄ¯s Dream and King Lear. We will study the text of the two plays, hearing audio cassettes, then watch videos. The main text books will be the Arden editions of the plays.

The main themes of study will be:
(1) The way Shakespeare writes
(2) The themes Shakespeare writes about
(3) The way people adapt Shakespeare for performance

Students should read the introduction to Shakespeare and his theatrical world in Brother Anthony's book Literature in English Society: The Renaissance (Sogang UP). In the Arden editions, students must read the introductory sections about "sources" and "the play".



Reports

For mid-term report, students will write a paper on the main themes of A Midsummer NightĄ¯s Dream, comparing the text of the play with the various versions seen.

For the final report, students will write a paper about the main themes of King Lear and the different ways it has been filmed.

Grading

Grades will be based on mid-term and final exams, and on the two reports. Each will be worth a maximum of  50 points.
