입버릇 동란 때 내가 가까이 모시던 노(老)비행사 한 분은 세상 못마땅한 일을 보거나 들으면 언성을 높여
'저런 죽일 놈'하고는 깜짝 놀라는 상대에게 이번엔 아주 상냥한 음성으로 '노래 한마디 부르겠습니다'하고 하여서 크게 웃겨 고약한 우리 심정을 달래곤 하였다”고 한다.
그런데 언재부터인가 그분의 입버릇이 부지중(不知中)
내게 옮아서, 이즈막 나는 행길에서도 “저런 죽일 놈” 버스에서도 “저런 죽일 놈” 모임에서도 “저런 죽일 놈” 심지어는 성당에서도 “저런 죽일 놈” 매일 저녁의 신문을 읽다가는 “저런 죽일 놈” “저런 죽일 놈들” 남의 귀에 들릴 정도는 아니지만 때도 곳도 가리지 않고 연발한다. 말이 씨가 된달까, 저런 증세가 날로 심해지면서 이번엔 내 마음속에 소리 안 나는 총이 있으면 정말 없애고 싶은 사람이 하나 둘 불어나고 그 욕망이 구체화 되어서 집단살인도 자행(恣行)할 기세라 이 밑도 끝도 없는 살의에 스스로가 놀라게끔 되었다. 그러다가 머리에 떠올린 것이 “저런 죽일 놈”하고선 “노래 한 마디 부르겠습니다”라고 엉뚱한 후렴(後斂)을 되풀이하는 그분의 말이 해독제(解毒劑)였음을 깨달았다
이제부터 나도
'저런 죽일 놈'
소리가 나오면 애송시 한 편이라도 읊어서 비록 마음속에서일 망정 살인은 안해야겠다.

ways of speaking
'Old Pilot', that I was close to during the Korean War, if ever he saw or heard of anybody acting improperly, would first cry out, 'I'll kill him!' in a loud voice, then say to his startled companions, this time in very sweet tones, 'I will now sing a song,' which would make us laugh and smooth down our bad feelings. However, at some time or other his way of
speaking transferred
itself unconsciously to me so that nowadays I find
myself saying
They say words are the seeds of action, and as
the symptoms are
getting worse day by day, if now in the heart there is a
silent gun, the
number of those I long to suppress keeps increasing one
by one, so that
if ever that desire materializes, I have fury enough to
commit mass murder,
and I am myself astonished at that bottomless endless
murderous intent.
And just now suddenly there flashed into my mind the realization that of course if 'Old Pilot' always used to add the preposterous refrain 'I will now sing a song,' to his repeated 'I'll kill him!', it was designed to act as an antidote. In future, whenever the thought 'I'll kill him!'
arises, I'll
likewise recite at least a favorite poem, so that there
will be no murder,
not even in the heart.
