혼자 논다

이웃집 소녀가

아직 초등학교도 안들어 갔을 무렵

하루는 나를 보고

ㅡ 할아버지는 유명하다면서?

그러길래

ㅡ 유명이 무엇인데?

하였더니

ㅡ 몰라!

란다. 그래 나는

ㅡ 그거 안좋은 거야!

하고 말해 주었다.

올해 그 애는 여중 2학년이 되어서

교과서에 실린 내 시를 배우게 됐는데

자기가 그 작자를 잘 안다고 그랬단다.

ㅡ 그래서 뭐라고 그랬니?

하고 물었더니

ㅡ 그저 보통 할아버진데, 어찌보면

그 모습이 혼자 노는 소년 같아!

라고 했단다.

나는 그 대답이 너무 흐뭇해서

ㅡ 잘 했어! 고마워!

라고 칭찬을 해 주고는

그날 종일이 유쾌했다.

Before the little girl next door
went to primary school
one day on seeing me she said,
'Granddad, they say you're famous?'
So I asked her,
'What's famous?'
She replied,
'I don't know!'
and I told her,
'It's something not good!'

This year, now in the second grade of middle school,
she studied one of my poems printed in their text-book,
and told me she had said that she knew the poet well.
'So what did you tell them?'
I asked;
'That you're just an ordinary old man, but
that you look like a little boy playing by himself!'
she replied.

I was delighted with her answer:
'Well done! Thank you!'
I said, praising her,
and felt cheerful for the rest of the day.
