A Fish

Since I was a fish

Since I was a skinny key that had been lost

revealed as Mother removed the bones from the flesh

Since I was a fish in the shape of a key

that wriggled in the water

and would open the water’s strongbox

Since the strongbox was full of nothing but foam and white paper.

Stuck inside Mother’s womb

that was like a lock hidden deep in her body,

since I was the key that opened the first act

of a comedy written by some aged playwright,

Therefore, since I was the key to an ancient theater

thrown away here beneath people’s feet . . . .

Air, Scribbles, a Bird that Flew into my Ear

One evening with no-one in charge, frying an old herring

then tossing the bones to the cat,

I headed for the inn where Mr. God himself often stays,

an inn that claims to provide bedding

capable of covering any vice for one night,

the inn of clouds flowing like blood-stained bedding

from the wardrobe, and the mourners, visiting without any fanfare,

placed two flowers to left and right of my dead-portrait by the bed

before leaving again.

Later that night, a bird flew into my ear

like a stone someone had thrown violently.

An otolith, one small egg laid parasitically in my ear,

and in that abandoned world

lovely patterns of slaughter are engraved.

The bird crows all night long inside my ear.

Like scribbles on a blackboard, like the hand of the wind

obliterating everything from the painted air,

now I shall quite this inn,

more cramped than my old overcoat.

A torn overcoat and a loose sweater woven of vapor-trails

left after nighttime air-raids

dyed red were laid over the bed of dawn

The refugees’ bus from Seoul to Damascus,

from Tara to Gaza following my auricle

descended in spirals then like a stone

thrown by someone as soon as the broken bus-window was opened,

the bird that had flown into my ear tore my eardrum open

and flung itself down out of the clouds.

Sunflower War

It’s evening, I have put an old LP version of the world on an old-fashioned turntable and am listening to hoarse songs in a sandstorm. I am grateful for the seasons you have been sending. We are obliged to lose a host of young soldiers due to the lack of seasons.

Dark and dry like the eye of God that has never wept, the great desert’s nights are beautiful. The veteran hanging up countless clusters of stars, the immortal battle-heroes evening and sky side-by-side are currently commanding us from the vanguard. The night marches endlessly climbing above the clouds, treading stairs piled with the insignia of young soldiers who died in anguish, constitute truly an arduous, cruel training.

Traitors. Long ago we went into battle to recover the sunflowers. The village was occupied by time’s liberation army and all the sunflowers were scattered. We were forced to hide and weep like crickets whose feelers have been severed.

The heart’s one kind of face. Mad sunflowers. Will they, that are nothing but heart, be happy leaving us, even without a proper body? Today again in the midst of the great desert I ran into some faceless sunflowers.

The song is still coming from the turntable. Following the hoarse songs of sunflowers I am engaged in night marches turning round and round on the turntable. Tonight the corpses of soldiers gone before hang from my ankles in place of a shadow.

             Are you safe?

I am merry and busy and grave like a marionette. I wind black, tough rain round my wrist and lift it up. Now, following the rhythm of the rain, I am practicing weeping without being sad, laughing without being happy.
